1956. “I like Ike”. Elvis. The stirrings of the Civil Rights Movement and a world we think of as simpler, safer, and quieter; a world we often recall fondly and with nostalgia. What could symbolize the best of the 1950's than the sleepy town of Kittanning. A town happily awaiting the warmth and open aired freshness of summer to celebrate its great historical moment, the bicentenary of a brutal battle waged between colonials and Native Americans during the French and Indian War, on this exact spot. Yet instead this lovely river town nestled in the hills of western Pennsylvania is about to awake not to tourists, parades, and hope - but to another battle, a battle with a serial killer with no pity or mercy. Is it one of the prominent, but new town residents, or someone who has lived here quietly for years? Join retired war-correspondent and big city newspaper reporter George Cooper and his novelist wife Ruth as they try to aid the police in stopping a ruthless and relentless murderer, who is more than happy to bring a reign of misery to this quiet town.

A Flash of Murder Jeff Boarts Books

I enjoyed reading "A Flash of Murder" by Jeff Boarts. Set in the 1950's in the small town of Kittanning, PA, what should have been excitement and anticipation of the bicentennial celebration, turned into shock, fear and uncertainty among the citizens over the course of several months.

The catchy title and cover design drew me in immediately. I was hooked right away in the first chapter, which is hard for most writers to accomplish on their first novel. Jeff made me care about the characters from the first page all the way to the last. I like how his protagonist, George Cooper, worked for the town newspaper - gave him some credibility and authority as the investigation moved along.

He did a great job inserting the red herrings to try to throw the reader off the trail scent. By the books' middle, I had suspected several people. The ending did surprise me. Loved the suspense when the killer's identity was revealed.

I learned a lot about Kittanning, PA and wonder if it still has that comfortable, neighborly small-town feel to it today. It's quite clear that not only has Jeff done his research, but he knows his history and is passionate about it. The only thing missing was a bio/ photo on the inside cover.

Yes, I highly recommend reading this book and look forward to his next one. Two thumbs up.

A Flash of Murder Jeff Boarts Books Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery. I loved reading about Kittanning's down home charm and history. The plot was suspenseful. It was a guessing game as to did it until the very end. I will recommend this to friends.
Nothing could be more idyllic than small town life in the mid 1950s. The town of Kittanning is preparing for the boon of the tourist season, particularly this year, when it is the bicentennial celebration of the French and Indian battle that put the town on the map. Life in town is routine, quiet, peaceful- or should I say, it was, until a serial killer with an unusual calling card begins terrorizing the town. As local reporter George Cooper assists the police in their attempts to catch the fiend, people all over town are wondering how well they actually know their neighbors.

This is the first time I have had the supreme honor to review for an author that I know in my personal life. Add to that the fact that this book is set in the town in which I live, and let me tell you, the anticipation of this book had me more antsy than a child on Christmas morning. And that anticipation? So totally worth it. I cannot fully express how impressed I am with this book.

While I am not, by any means, an aficionado of mystery novels, I think even a novice to the genre can see the skillful manner in which the author created the plot and action of the story. Within minutes of the opening, the action begins, and builds throughout the story. I felt myself increasingly pulled into the plot, yet never at anytime did I feel the action or any of the specific scenes overwhelm the story as a whole.

I loved the setting of the story, although I am a bit partial. Despite the fact that this was my town, it was still a new setting due to the era. There is a definite feeling of noir to the story, but it is very subtle; you never see any of the stilted and often cheesy dialogue found in some noir stories, particularly those with the pulp or hard boiled slant. No, this is more of a noir light, enough to set the scene and the tone, but not hit you over the head. I thought it was just perfect. The small town feeling was just general enough that it could be relatable to anyone living in a small town, while still focusing on the specifics of a very real location with real history.

Of all the writing aspects, I was probably most impressed with the character development. Many times, when I read mysteries, there is so much focus on the action that I never connect to the characters. This book shows that you can have well developed characters, with whom a reader connects, without shortchanging the action. I really came to care about George, and his suffering throughout the book. And I found myself empathizing with many of the characters, both major and minor. I felt like I was a part of the town, dealing with the situation right alongside them.

In terms of the "whodunit" aspect of the book, I started out thinking I knew the culprit. By the end, I was not sure who to trust. The story takes plenty of twists and turns, and of course a couple of red herrings. I felt like it followed a logical path, one that any crime investigation would follow, and in the end, it all made sense. However, I thought some of the "clues" along the way were presented in brilliant, subtle ways. It makes me want to immediately re-read the book to catch them all.

In short, I have nothing but glowing praise for the book.
I really enjoyed this mystery. It kept me guessing until the end. Characters were extremely likeable and believeable. I especially enjoyed the historical references and humor. I hope we hear a lot more from this author.
Ruth and George are two of a kind. You'll have to keep reading, not only to find out whodunnit, but because you can't get enough of the couple's mischief! Way to go, Jeff! I love it!
Set in the mid-1950s, an idyllic time, in a peaceful western Pennsylvania town--the very place you would never expect such horrific things to happen. This only adds to the eerie atmosphere of the book. The writer is well-familiar with the historical places and events he portrays, which adds so much authenticity. Well-structured and plotted, and the price is a steal...give it a try!
This one of the best mystery stories I have ever read! Once you start reading it, you can't put the book down. It has an addictive quality to it that will captivate your attention from the very first chapter. It's very well written, and I hope to see more books published by this up and coming author.
I really enjoyed reading A Flash of Murder. This story about a serial killer terrorizing a small town in the 1950s is fast-paced and action-packed. I read the book in about two days and that's saying a lot from a busy mom who doesn't get much of a chance to read! The main character, George Cooper, is a newspaper journalist writing the story and carefully following the investigation of the Kittanning Killer. His wife Ruth is a mystery writer herself and they, like many others in their town, become obsessed with this case. And in a small town where stories are shared over cups of coffee at the town diner and rumors are traded at the hair salon, everybody is a suspect. The cast of characters is extensive but Boarts manages them extremely well. Like most small town narratives, everybody is a little quirky. I don't know if the imaginary world of this book deserves any more terror than they received at the hands of the Kittanning Killer, but I do know that I wouldn't mind reading another story with this ensemble of characters.
