The Complete Aubrey/Maturin Novels Vol 5 volumes Patrick O'Brian Books

The Complete Aubrey/Maturin Novels Vol 5 volumes Patrick O'Brian Books
I bought this boxed set a few years back, having previously read library copies of the novels. I just took it out to reread the series, and I feel impelled to comment on the production. The twenty novels in the series are divided among five volumes, with an average length of 1300 pages. The books are beautifully designed to be both legible and comfortable to hold. They are a bit shorter and narrower than the standard hardback. The typeface is small but legibly spaced. The paper is very thin but entirely opaque. The cloth covers are a beautiful nautical blue, and the sewn-in red ribbon bookmarks are a nice touch. The dust jackets feature a photo of the author on the front, and the spines combine to produce an attractive painting of Jack Aubrey's four principal ships. It's rare to see such care in book design today, and it is appreciated by us dinosaurs who find pleasure in holding and reading a beautiful book. It's of course unnecessary to recommend these wonderful novels, with their adroit mixture of hair-raising action, meticulously researched detail, well-rounded characters, and witty, elegant writing. Save up your pennies and enjoy!
I'm lowering my rating from five stars to four after experiencing the editing problems described by other reviewers. But proofreading is becoming a lost art these days, isn't it?

The Complete Aubrey/Maturin Novels Vol 5 volumes Patrick O'Brian Books Reviews
Great books that I intend to read again. I’m only disappointed the text was downsized rather small which makes the language, already complex, somewhat more difficult to read.
Paper is like cigarette paper thickness - its so fine you see the text on the other side of the page coming through.
While the books of Patrick O'Brian are fantastic reads, this collections suffers greatly from several shortcomings.
1) They are simply poor quality. The paper is very thin and for hardcover volumes the boards are thin and flimsy. I expect these were cost-cutting measures by the publisher, but I still expect more for the purchase price.
2) There are too many type setting/copy editing/printing errors. While it is difficult to produce a single book without any printing errors, never mind 20 books, I find this collection to be extremely poorly copy edited/printed. In any given book there are usually upwards of 30 errors, and the number tends to increase as you work through the series. These usually take the form of gross misspellings or incorrect punctuation. While 30 some odd errors over 200-300 pages may not seem like much, I find it excessive and these certainly detract from the enjoyment of what are great stories.
So I find this collection to be poorly edited and produced.
This volume of books goes down as one of the all time great literature classics. I read the first book on a whim after seeing it in a used book store and having liked the Master and Commander movie. From that point on I read the entire series and could not put them down. O'Brian makes you feel you are living in Aubrey's world, on the ship with him and sailing the high seas. One gets to know Aubrey and Maturin intimately and by the end of the series, you are longing for more O'Brian. I was actually sad when I finished because there was no more story to read. As a military officer myself, I was surprised to find good, realistic lessons in leadership throughout the series. As a history buff, the fine historical detail of seamanship, naval warfare and life on a 19th century war Naval vessel is unbelievable. If you like tales of the sea, ocean and sailing this swashbuckling adventure is for you. Likewise, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guardsmen will also especially enjoy O'Brian's masterpiece of the Royal Navy during the19th Century Napoleonic era. From time to time I run into unexpected people that have read O'Brian's work, it is like a small fraternity, and we all seem to have shared the same impression and viewpoint of how great these novels are.
I bought this set in January 2008. It is really a fascinating read for somebody like myself who has sailed across oceans in sailboats and on tankers and cargo ships (I have an expired ship's masters license USCG). I have always loved the sea and ships and I know quite a bit about sea life (reading Oceanic Birds of South America as a teenager - which I own as well) and Darwin's voyage on the Beagle etc. You have to love fine details and love the idea of living in the past. Well written and a good escape for me. I just felt too protective of this set and left it on the shelf and am selling it. The typos have been discussed but I do not know because I never took the pretty volumes off the shelf. The pages are thin but of good quality. But I just bought ten more paperbacks to round out the ten I had I found in a used book shops over the years. Better for me not to worry when I throw it into a bag and head for the beach.
Amazing collection to have all the volumes in one set and in chronologically arranged. The type set is not perfect however, many letters are set as numbers and many times other type set errors, they were missed during the proof. Overall a great buy, but not archive nor library quality. Perhaps the next edition will be corrected.
