Ms. Lindsey's Stormy Persuasion is a fantastic read. I'm a James Malory junkie and any story including him is a must read for me. I was very happy to catch up with him and his wife, Georgina. I was also pleased with the way Ms. Lindsey included most of the Malory clan into the story, as they are all characters I have enjoyed reading in the past.

Stormy Persuasion is a character and a plot driven read. The bulk of the story takes place on board James Malory's ship, as a good chunk of the Malory clan are sailing to the States for Jacqueline (James' daughter) and Judith's (Anthony's daughter) come out ball. Weeks before Judith embarks on the journey, she has an encounter with a stranger at a darkened manor behind her cousin's estate. Not having time to investigate who the stranger is and why he's hiding in the abandoned home, she tries to dismiss the matter, until she meets crew member, Nathan. His choice of words leads her to deduce he's the man she met that night. More importantly, she is certain Nathan is a smuggler. Nathan won't confirm or deny her suspicions, but he does need her secrecy. He strikes a bargain with her; if she keeps his secret he'll answer her questions. And she has plenty.

Nathan and Judith make for one of the sweetest, most romantic couples. He reminds me of James Malory; a little stubborn, a little reckless, and once he falls in love, he's loyal to the core. Judith is charming. At first a shy and cautious, when she is around Nathan, her confidence blooms, and so does her passion and love for him. Together, these two heat up the pages. They endear themselves to the reader's heart in pure 'Johanna Lindsey' style. Combined with a plot to involve a jewelry theft, ship thieves and possibly an old enemy, Stormy Persuasions has a great cast of secondary characters who light up the pages as much as Judith and Nathan, which has me eagerly anticipating Jacqueline's story. It's little wonder when I open a Johanna Lindsey novel I can't put it down!

Stormy Persuasion A Malory Novel MaloryAnderson Family Johanna Lindsey 9781476714271 Books Reviews

A story involving the Malory family is definitely one to get my attention. For the most part, stories revolving around this family are some of my favorite books by this author who I’ve been reading since the 70s.

At one time I pre-ordered every release by Johanna, but not for a number of years now. I’m not sure if her writing style has changed or it’s my expectations since what I read has expanded into numerous genres. But I haven’t been especially thrilled with her more recent releases.

This is about the daughters of two of my favorite Malorys, Anthony and James, who thankfully are on hand for much of the story. Part of the enjoyment comes from seeing the newer generation taking a leading role as the girls are now old enough for their first Season. And we get to see the Andersons since James had been made to promise at Jack’s birth that her first coming out would be at their home.

So a family trip overseas takes up a good chunk of the story. Judith and Jack are definitely interesting characters, as is Nathan, the story’s hero, the captain of his own ship that was stolen. We’re provided some action and apparently a set-up for Jack’s story.

But honestly, if familiar characters weren’t on hand, this book wouldn’t have been nearly as enjoyable. We do get the author’s trademark dry humor, drama and interesting characters. But the romance was aggravating. I wanted to knock a couple of heads together. And while Judith and Nathan do finally get it together, another part of the drama is left to continue when the focus is later on Jack.
??? I am stunned at the overwhelming 5 star ratings. I confess to having enjoyed the first novels in this series - in particular, James' and Anthony's stories, but this one? In fact, I had decided against purchasing the novels after Derek's book, but recently re-read James' and Anthony's stories once again so decided to pick one of the more current Malory novels with the most favorable ratings.

I settled in to read, but the story just never took off for me. Plus, so much of it was just not really believable. The entire romance between Nathan and Judith bordered on childishness and there was never any real chemistry between the two of them. Perhaps this was due in part to the backstory which included a lot of characters. Some, like Catherine who could have been more interesting had any effort been made to turn her into a "true" character - same with the "gypsy" cousin, Andrew. The two of them were simply placeholders, making brief appearances so that the main characters could appear to be a bit more interesting. It just didn't work for me.

There is enough of a backstory with Jacqueline (Jack) and someone she only refers to as the Bastard to make me plan on purchasing her book when it comes out. In fact, she was by far and away the most interesting person in the book. Normally, I love the bits and pieces we have of the original characters like James and Anthony, but Anthony came across as comedic and James was simply on his best behavior.

2 1/2 stars - upped to 3 Stars.
I want to love this book. I just can't. There are eight chapters of what reads like the longest family reunion ever. Eight chapters of reintroducing almost every Malory in a head whirling quick fashion. Eight chapters that made me want to scream if I had to hear one more time about how they all met. What isn't spent on family reunion time is spent too much on James and Jack. Very little time is spent on the main characters and if you didn't read the about info, you might think this book is about Jack. This book seems more like a tribute to her favorite characters. In order to contrast between Judy and Jack, I think Judy is made very boring in comparison. It's hard to take a romance seriously when most of it happens with her father around.
